Different Forms of Neuropathy

There are many diabetic patients who experience the painful condition that is known as neuropathy. It can be a bothersome side effect that can cause severe pain and discomfort, in addition to creating a numbing or tingling sensation. A common form of this condition is known as peripheral neuropathy, which is generally the result of high blood sugar levels. There are other forms of neuropathy, which include autonomic, motor, and sensory neuropathy. The former can affect the digestive process and possibly the organs. The muscles in the feet can be damaged by motor neuropathy, and may lead to foot conditions such as a hammertoe. When the blood sugar levels are elevated for a long period of time, sensory neuropathy may develop, and the nerves in the feet may be impacted. If you are experiencing any form of neuropathy, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine the cause of your condition.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Dr. Steven Sheridan from Ankle & Foot Specialty Clinics. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

Is It Ok to Wear Flip Flops?

Flip flops have become a popular type of shoe to wear during the warmer months of the year. They are easy to wear, and are designed in a variety of colors and materials. Many people choose to wear flip flops despite the foot conditions they may cause. These can consist of pain in the heel and arch areas, which may be a result of a lack of support the thin soles generally provide. Additionally, the toes are exposed, and many people may stub them, or have heavy objects fall on them. Blisters may form between the toes in a grasping effort to keep the shoes on the feet. If you would like more information about how flip flops affect the feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

Flip-flops can cause a lot of problems for your feet. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Dr. Steven Sheridan from Ankle & Foot Specialty Clinics. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

Flip-flops have managed to become a summer essential for a lot of people. While the shoes may be stylish and easy to slip on and off, they can be dangerous to those who wear them too often. These shoes might protect you from fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, but they can also give you foot pain and sprained ankles if you trip while wearing them.

When Are They Okay to Wear?

Flip-flops should only be worn for very short periods of time. They can help protect your feet in places that are crawling with fungi, such as gym locker rooms. Athlete’s foot and plantar warts are two common fungi that flip-flops may help protect your feet against.

Why Are They Bad for My Feet?

These shoes do not offer any arch support, so they are not ideal for everyday use. They also do not provide shock absorption or heel cushioning which can be problematic for your feet. Additionally, you may suffer from glass cuts, puncture wounds, and stubbed toes since they offer little protection for your feet.

More Reasons Why They Are Bad for Your Feet

  • They Slow You Down
  • May Cause Blisters and Calluses
  • Expose Your Feet to Bacteria

Common Signs You May Have Toenail Fungus

There are noticeable signs you may have developed toenail fungus. These often include the nail appearing thick, yellowed, and unsightly. It may target the big toenail first, then gradually spread to the other toenails. Many patients who have this ailment notice there can be an unpleasant odor that comes from the nails. This may be a result of fungus that has gathered under the nail, and the odor may continue to be there after the feet have been washed. In severe cases, the toenail may fall off, and will grow back normally when correct treatment begins. For stubborn cases of toenail fungus, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can prescribe medication that can effectively treat this condition.

For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Steven Sheridan of Ankle & Foot Specialty Clinics. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a condition that affects many people and can be especially hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating and avoiding it.

Antifungals & Deterrence

Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.

How Can Plantar Fasciitis Be Treated?

Plantar fasciitis is an uncomfortable foot condition that often leads to a great deal of foot pain, felt most prominently in the heel region of the feet. The plantar fascia is the tissue in the foot that stretches from the heel to to the front of the bottom of the foot. When this tissue is damaged, or overworked, the condition known as plantar fasciitis may develop, causing intense heel pain. To help treat this condition, it may be beneficial to avoid stressful athletic activities. To cope with pain, Ibuprofen may be taken, and cortisone injections may be administered to the affected foot. Wearing custom orthotics is another great treatment option to help relieve the discomfort of plantar fasciitis. For more information on treating this condition, it’s suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Dr. Steven Sheridan  from Ankle & Foot Specialty Clinics. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.
