Types of Hammertoe Surgery

Hammertoe is a condition where the second, third, or fourth toe bends at the joint due to muscle or ligament imbalance, often caused by factors like injury, wearing poor footwear, or arthritis. Surgery can be an option for severe cases causing pain or balance issues, but it may not be suitable for those with poor circulation, increased surgery risks, or infections. Successful treatment depends on the severity of the hammertoe. Options may include tendon transfer, joint resection, or fusion, with the latter two involving cutting tendons and ligaments to straighten the toe. Tendon transfer reroutes tendons to straighten the toe, while joint resection and fusion involve bone alterations and the use of pins or screws. If you have a hammertoe and it is causing discomfort, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss whether surgery is an option for you.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Dr. Steven Sheridan from Ankle & Foot Specialty Clinics. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

The Definition and Stages of Gout

Gout, a form of arthritis, is characterized by the accumulation of urate crystals in joints, leading to inflammation and intense pain. The onset of gout is marked by sudden and severe joint pain, commonly affecting the big toe. As the condition progresses, these painful episodes may recur, spreading to other joints such as ankles, knees, and wrists. Gout evolves through distinct stages. In the asymptomatic hyperuricemia stage, elevated uric acid levels exist without noticeable symptoms. The acute gouty arthritis stage follows, presenting with sudden and excruciating joint pain. Without proper management, the inter-critical gout stage ensues, marked by symptom-free intervals between painful episodes. In advanced cases, chronic tophaceous gout manifests, characterized by the formation of tophi, which are visible lumps of urate crystals that form in joints and surrounding tissues. Understanding the stages of gout is essential for effective management, emphasizing the importance of lifestyle changes and medical interventions to alleviate symptoms and prevent long-term joint damage. If you are afflicted with gout, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you with pain management strategies.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Steven Sheridan from Ankle & Foot Specialty Clinics. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

How Seniors Can Prevent Falling

As people age, preventing falls becomes more and more important for maintaining overall well-being. Exercise plays a pivotal role in fall prevention. Activities that improve balance and strengthen your legs, such as Tai Chi, are beneficial. Lack of exercise leads to weakness, increasing the risk of falls. Regular eye and foot check-ups are essential, as poor vision raises fall risks. Certain modifications can enhance your safety at home. Remove tripping hazards, secure rugs with double-sided tape, and place frequently used items within easy reach. Install grab bars in the bathroom, use non-slip mats, and improve lighting. Lastly, wear well-fitting, supportive shoes, both indoors and outdoors. Handrails and proper lighting on staircases, both indoors and outside, contribute to a safer living environment. Review all medications, as some can cause dizziness. Discuss vitamin D supplements to enhance bone, muscle, and nerve health. Keep your podiatrist informed if balance or other foot problems are putting you at risk for falls. Additionally, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment yearly to have your feet examined by a podiatrist in addition to discussing any foot issues that may contribute to risks of falling.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Dr. Steven Sheridan from Ankle & Foot Specialty Clinics. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Causes and Treatment of Black Toenail

A toenail turning black could be more than just a cosmetic concern. Discoloration, particularly a black toenail, is often a sign of an underlying issue that may require attention. One of the primary reasons for a black toenail is a bruise beneath the nail caused by trauma or pressure, also called a subungual hematoma. This common occurrence can result from stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it. It also is common among runners as a result of the repetitive impact of the toenail against the front of the shoe. Shoes that are too tight or poorly fitting may create friction, causing damage to the nail and leading to subungual hematomas. Further, fungal nail infections, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems, diabetes, or vascular disease, can cause toenail discoloration. These infections thrive in moist environments, making sweaty feet more susceptible. Ingrown toenails, a painful condition where the nail grows into the surrounding skin, can also cause discoloration. This may lead to bacterial infections, contributing to the darkening of the nail. In rare cases, a black toenail may be a sign of subungual melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Although uncommon, it is essential to seek medical attention if you notice persistent discoloration that is not linked to trauma or fungal infections. Certain medications can lead to toenail discoloration, including cancer drugs, antibiotics, retinoids, and drugs used to treat autoimmune conditions. If you have noticed your toenail changing in color, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist who can determine the cause, and offer treatment options.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Steven Sheridan of Ankle & Foot Specialty Clinics. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
